To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the real increase in a police constable's pay over the last 10 years.

Between March 1980 and March 1990, the basic pay of a police constable increased by 100 per cent., from £5,334 to £10,671 a year. Over the same period, the retail prices index increased by 86.9 per cent. and the tax and prices index by 77.3 per cent.
