To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on developments towards economic and monetary union within the Community.

Mr. Ryder

Measures to improve the co-ordination of member states' economic and monetary policies were discussed at the Council of Economic and Finance Ministers on 12 March, about which I reported to the House on 14 March.

Preparation for the intergovernmental conference on economic and monetary union, which will begin at the end of the year, is taking place in the Council and its committees.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what discussions took place at the most recent meeting of ECOFIN about the implementation of stage 1 of the Delors report on economic and monetary union.
