To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many civil servants were in his Department in 1975, 1979 and at the latest date for which statistics are available; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ryder

There were 1,065 civil servants employed in the Treasury at 1 January 1975 and 1,052 at 1 January 1979. In November 1981 a number of additional functions were transferred to the Treasury from the Civil Service Department, increasing Treasury numbers to 4,177 at 1 January 1982. The number employed at I February 1990 was 3,155.
