HC Deb 12 March 1990 vol 169 c62W
79. Mr. Andrew Mitchell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what aid the United Kingdom currently gives to Tanzania.

Mrs. Chalker

In 1988 (the latest year for which firm figures are available) the cost of our bilateral aid amounted to £33.4 million. During my visit to Tanzania earlier this month I increased our latest pledge of balance of payments support to £17.5 million, for spending by the end of financial year 1990–91. All our bilateral aid to Tanzania is on grant terms.

In addition to our bilateral aid we contribute through multilateral agencies, including the EC. Tanzania has been allocated 169 million ecu (about £125 million) under Lome III for the period 1985–90, of which our share is around £20 million.

81. Mr. Raison

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether the Minister for Overseas Development holds regular discussions with the Government of Tanzania.

Mrs. Chalker

I have just returned from a full and useful visit to Tanzania, during which I renewed the regular discussions which I and my predecessors have maintained with the Tanzanian Government.
