To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a further statement on aid to Nicaragua.

We are considering the possibility of a small bilateral technical co-operation programme to Nicaragua. In doing so we are taking account of the discussions that my hon. Friend the Member for Watford (Mr Garel-Jones) had with the President-elect during his visit to Managua last week.

However, central America is not a priority area for United Kingdom bilateral aid. The main channel for United Kingdom assistance to Nicaragua will continue to be through our contribution to EC aid. We shall seek to ensure that EC aid to Nicaragua is maintained, and possibly increased, once Senora Chamorro's democratically elected Government take office.
