Britain's bilateral aid to Africa rose from £305 million in 1987 to £422 million in 1988. In the same period our multilateral aid programme (for example, our contributions to the World bank, the European development fund and the various UN agencies) rose from £523 million to £659 million, with over half these funds being destined ultimately for Africa. Figures for 1989 are not yet available.
