HC Deb 12 March 1990 vol 169 cc125-6W
44. Mr. Harry Greenway

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what measures his Department is taking to make roads in London more environmentally appropriate.

Mr. Atkins

The recent report, "Trunk Roads, England.Into the 1990s", detailed measures which this Government are taking to enhance the environment of trunk roads, including the allocation of extra resources for landscaping works and planting in urban schemes. A good example on an existing trunk road in London is to be found in my hon. Friend's constituency, where six miles of the A40 Western avenue is being landscaped and improved at a cost of over £640,000.

Another initiative to be launched shortly is the "Eastgate Project", the object of which is to raise funds from City institutions, docklands businesses and others for environmental improvements along the corridor of the A 13 trunk road in Tower Hamlets. This largely privately funded project is designed to complement the borough council's own scheme of terrace refurbishments as well as the programme of road improvements to the A 13 itself.
