HC Deb 05 March 1990 vol 168 cc445-6W
Ms. Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what is his Department's policy on sexual harassment at work; whether guidance on reporting complaints has been issued to all staff; how many complaints have been reported in the past five years; and what disciplinary action has been taken;

(2) whether he will issue instructions for the removal of all offensive pin-ups in all his departmental premises.

Mr. Chris Patten

Sexual harassment at work is not tolerated and is dealt with as a disciplinary matter. Guidance on this policy has been issued to all staff making clear that, among other things, the display of such items a s sexually explicit calendars is unacceptable. No central record of complaints was kept until mid-1986. Since then there have been five complaints wyhich have been fully investigated. It is not the Department's practice to publish the disciplinary action taken in individual cases.
