HC Deb 05 March 1990 vol 168 c423W
Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what has been the loss of revenue to Northern Ireland railways as a result of terrorist activity in each of the last five calendar or financial years for which figures are available.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

[holding answer 27 February 1990]: Northern Ireland Railways Co. Ltd. has informed me that because of the infrequency of incidents before 1989–90 no figures are available. The loss of revenue for 1989–90 is £581,000 to date. In addition to the security implications, there is a significant environmental impact, especially as the relative advantage of the rail service is reduced and more people switch to the road.
