HL Deb 05 March 1990 vol 516 c1044WA
Viscount Dilhorne

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will make a statement about the incineration of chemical wastes at sea.

Baroness Trumpington

At the 1987 North Sea ministerial conference it was agreed that marine incineration should be phased out by 31st December 1994 as alternative means of dealing with the wastes concerned were becoming available. Land-based incineration facilities capable of dealing with the UK wastes which are currently burnt at sea, are now being developed. We have therefore decided that no more UK waste will be licensed for marine incineration after the end of this year.
