HL Deb 25 June 1990 vol 520 cc1427-8WA
Lord Northfield

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they are taking to ensure that the EC draft regulation on the protection of animals at the time of slaughter is amended to include special provisions for deer.

Baroness Trumpington

European Commission officials are working on a draft measure on the protection of animals, including deer, at the time of slaughter but have not yet made a formal proposal to the Council. The Government will seek to ensure that specific welfare measures for deer and other animal species which we consider to be desirable are, so far as possible, adopted throughout the European Community. Interested parties are being consulted about the Commission's draft measure and we shall take account of their views in future negotiations.
