HC Deb 21 June 1990 vol 174 cc693-4W
41. Mr. Knapman

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he has any plans to appoint a director of conservation; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Yes. We shall combine the functions of the conservation and environmental protection divisions of the Department of Environment Northern Ireland within an expanded directorate of environmental services. It will be headed by a new post at grade 4 level.

Two further senior appointments, at grade 5 and grade 6 level, will be made. A successor to the director of conservation, who retired on 11 June 1990, will be appointed as soon as possible. This will continue the process of enhancing the profile of conservation and environmental protection in Northern Ireland and of strengthening the resources directed to that end.
