HL Deb 18 June 1990 vol 520 c721WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many migrants are currently in detention; whether they can break down the total between detention centres, police cells, prisons and other institutions; and how many of those detained were refugees seeking asylum.

Viscount Ullswater

No central record is maintained of the number of people held in detention under Immigration Act powers. On 5th June there were 175 people detained solely under Immigration Act powers in the following establishments:

Number
Harmondsworth detention centre 74
Gatwick Airport 12
HMP Haslar 89
Total 175

It is estimated that some 39 people were detained at other prisons, or temporarily in police cells, in the South East of England on the same day. There is no central record of how many of those detained had sought asylum.
