HC Deb 05 June 1990 vol 173 c472W
Mr. Frank Cook

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Newport, West (Mr. Flynn),Official Report, 11 May, columns 249–50, what volumes of radioactive waste are produced each year at each United Kingdom establishment in each territory to which it makes reference; and what form of transport is used to return these wastes to the United Kingdom.

Mr. Neubert

I have been asked to reply.

I refer the hon. Member to the replies that my hon. Friend the Member for Hove (Mr. Sainsbury) gave on 20 January 1988, at columns 762–63, 25 January 1989, at column 653, and 13 July 1989 at column 589.

The form of transport used would be that most appropriate to the circumstances, but would always conform with the Secretary of State's assurances that conditions would be no less stringent than those applying internationally to the movement of civil radioactive material. It is not our practice for reasons of national security to give a complete breakdown of radioactive waste arisings at all our defence establishments.
