Sir David Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when a full report will be made public on the findings of the Scotland Yard detectives who have been helping the El Salvadorean authorities with their investigations into the murder in November 1989 of six Jesuit priests.

Mr. Sainsbury

I refer the right hon. Member to the answer I gave the hon. Member for Cynon Valley (Mrs. Clwyd) on 21 May, Vol. 173, column33.

Sir David Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what reports and assessments Her Majesty's Government have received on the scope, effectiveness and professionalism of the investigation by the El Salvadorean authorities into the murder in November 1989 of six Jesuit priests.

Mr. Sainsbury

We receive regular reports from our embassy, and have seen reports from a number of other sources, on the progress of the investigation into the killing of six Jesuits, their housekeeper and her daughter on 16 November 1989. The investigation is not yet complete. Meanwhile, eight members of the armed forces in El Salvador remain in detention.
