To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the number of teachers employed in schools in shire counties in 1990; and what was the number of teachers employed in schools in shire counties in 1985.

Mr. Fallon

The number of teachers—full-time equivalents—in nursery primary and secondary schools maintained by local education authorities in English shire counties were, in thousands:

A further 340 teachers were employed in grant maintained schools in these counties in January 1990.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total estimated expenditure on tertiary education in all shire counties for 1990; and what was the total actual expenditure on education in all shire counties in 1985.

Mr. Eggar

Local authority returns of expenditure to the Department of the Environment do not separately identify spending on tertiary education.

The number of pupils in maintained primary schools and the number of pupils in all schools in non-metropolitan counties at January 1989 and January 1985 are given. Data for January 1990 are not yet available.
