HL Deb 26 July 1990 vol 521 cc1787-8WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will discuss with the Soviet Government, in whatever forum is now appropriate, the renewed possibility of the reversal of the waters of some of their north-flowing rivers, in order to refill the Aral Sea.

The Earl of Caithness

We are well aware of the environmental harm being done to the region as the Aral Sea dries up and the suffering that is consequently being caused to those who live in the vicinity of the sea. We would willingly discuss any proposals put to us by the Russians and would hope to respond positively should they wish to draw on any relevant expertise we might have in this country.
