HC Deb 25 July 1990 vol 177 c292W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is Her Majesty's Government's policy in respect of United Nations declarations 1514 (XV) of 14 December 1960 and 2625 (XX) of 24 October 1970.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The United Kingdom abstained with other western countries on the declaration on the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples of 1960, largely because it envisaged independence as the only possible outcome of self-determination. The United Kingdom joined in supporting the declaration on principles of international law concerning friendly relations with co-operation among states in accordance with the charter of the United Nations, of 1970, and continues to support it.
