HL Deb 25 July 1990 vol 521 c1602WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have agreed within NATO, or with individual NATO allies that Anti-Ballistic Missiles such as Patriot should be deployed in Europe, and if so whether such deployment is in accordance with the letter and the spirit of the ABM Treaty, strictly interpreted.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (The Earl of Arran)

The US Patriot surface-to-air missile system is being deployed by NATO Allies in Europe as part of the Allied Command in Europe integrated air defence system; it is deployed primarily as an anti-aircraft system. Its deployment is not in breach of the ABM Treaty.
