HC Deb 25 July 1990 vol 177 c349W
Mr. Wareing

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make representations to UEFA to lift the ban on the entrance of Liverpool football club into European competitions; how many representations he has received against the ban; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Atkins

As I made clear in my recent letter and report to UEFA on progress on measures to combat football hooliganism, I believe that a blanket ban on English clubs participating in European competitions is no longer justified. As to the question of lifting UEFA's additional three-year ban on Liverpool football club, in the first instance it is for the English FA to nominate Liverpool and for UEFA to take the final decision. Since August 1989 I have received five letters in support of the lifting of the ban on Liverpool.
