§ Lord Stoddart of Swindonasked Her Majesty's Government:
Following the answer of Viscount Davidson on 18th July, whether they will reconsider their attitude towards a "Europlate" and insist that the Union Jack rather than the European flag should be incorporated on number plates of cars registered in the United Kingdom.
§ Lord Brabazon of TaraNo. The object of the European flag proposal is to foster in all member states a sense of identity with the European Community. Putting the Union Jack on number plates would not be consistent with that aim. National identity would not however be lost: the Geneva Convention abbreviation of the country in which the vehicle is registered—e.g. GB, IRL, etc.—would be incorporated on the plate.
