To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list those statutory functions currently carried out by the Nature Conservancy Council.

Mr. Trippier

The statutory functions of the Nature Conservancy Council were set out in section 1, together with schedule 1, of the Nature Conservancy Council Act 1973.

Since 1973, the following Acts have conferred additional functions on the council: Import of Live Fish (Scotland) Act 1978, Highways Act 1980, Animal Health Act 1981, Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Inheritance Tax Act 1984, Roads (Scotland) Act 1984, Agriculture Act 1986, Channel Tunnel Act 1987, Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Act 1988, Electricity Act 1989, and the Water Act 1989.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many staff are currently employed by the Nature Conservancy Council on(a) permanent contracts and (b) temporary contracts.

Mr. Trippier

On 1 July this year, the Nature Conservancy Council employed 766 full-time staff and 87 part-time staff on permanent contracts, and 449 full-time and 42 part-time staff on temporary contracts.
