HL Deb 16 July 1990 vol 521 cc735-6WA
Lord Rea

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many product licences for new pharmaceutical products have been granted in each of the past 10 years.

Baroness Hooper

The figures for the year prior to 1982 are not available in a comparable form. The figures for the period 1982–1989 are as follows:—

Product licences for medicinal products containing a new active substance
Number
1982 49
1983 26
1984 9
1985 19
1986 36
1987 41
1988 47
1989 72

Differences from year to year in the number of licences for products containing a new active substance must be treated with caution since:—

  1. (a) the year in which particular licences were granted may be dependent on a variety of factors; and,
  2. (b) the number of licences granted may depend on the number of dosage forms needed for the particular products.
