HC Deb 12 July 1990 vol 176 cc306-7W
Mr. Battle

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether the Government are proposing to recognise the Democratic People's Republic of Korea; and if they will be taking steps through the United Nations to improve relations between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea.

Mr. Sainsbury

We have no plans to recognise North Korea as a state. We actively support all steps towards peace on the Korean peninsula, including those pursued through the United Nations, but we believe that progress can be achieved only through direct contacts between North and South Korea. We welcome the resumption of contacts on 3 July.

Mr. Battle

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if the Government have any plans to establish diplomatic relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Mr. Sainsbury
