HL Deb 03 July 1990 vol 520 c2086WA
Lord Graham of Edmonton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are the implications arising from the completion of the Single Market for the United Kingdom banana market and licensing regime.

The Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Baroness Trumpington)

The European Commission have not yet come forward with a proposal for the arrangements to apply for bananas post 1992. It is not, therefore, possible to say what will be the implications of the Single Market for the United Kingdom banana market and licensing regime. The Government are committed to ensuring that any common arrangements for bananas take full account of our commitments to our ACP suppliers. We shall also have in mind the interests of consumers, trade policy considerations and the competition and efficiency objectives of the Single Market.
