HC Deb 30 January 1990 vol 166 c132W
Sir Trevor Skeet

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many lighthouses there are around the United Kingdom, detailing the number with resident keepers and the number electronically controlled from land bases; and when he expects all lighthouses to be radio-controlled from land bases.

Mr. McLoughlin

The general lighthouse authorities operate 289 lighthouses around the United Kingdom. Of these, 58 are manned; 73 are monitored from other bases; and 158 are neither manned nor monitored from other bases. The automation of the remaining manned lighthouses, except those designed as area control stations, is planned to be complete by 1998; but a substantial number will remain neither manned nor monitored from other bases. I have no information on lighthouses operated by local lighthouse authorities.
