HC Deb 27 February 1990 vol 168 c112W
Mr. Amos

To ask the Attorney-General how many prosecutions there have been of people publicly calling for the death of Salman Rushdie; and if he will make a statement.

The Attorney-General

No prosecutions have been instituted for incitement to murder or threats to kill, due to a lack of sufficient evidence to justify the institution of criminal proceedings. However, where demonstrations which have included people publicly calling for the death of Salman Rushdie have led to instances of public disorder, prosecutions have followed. The director regards as a matter of extreme gravity any conduct on the part of any person within this jurisdiction which does amount to the offence of incitement to murder. It will remain his policy, with my full agreement, to deal accordingly with evidence establishing such conduct that may be placed before him.
