Mr. Battle

Mr. Harry Barnes

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether his Department has any intention of introducing study vouchers for the 16 to 18-year-old age group; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Jackson

The Government believe that all young people leaving full-time education at 16 or 17 should have the opportunity to pursue good-quality part-time education and training leading to nationally recognised qualifications. It is essential that our work force has the skills necessary to compete in the 1990s. The Government are giving serious consideration to the CBI's proposals for credits as a possible means of achieving this.
