HC Deb 19 February 1990 vol 167 cc531-2W
Mr. Marlow

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what assessment he has made of the likely cost to the United Kingdom of German reunification; and if he will give the amount and the years in which it is likely to arise.

Mr. Ryder

[holding answer 15 February 1990]: My right hon. Friend is monitoring the steps being taken on reunification closely. However, it is too early to assess whether there are any costs to the United Kingdom, and if so what they may be.

Mr. Marlow

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the effect of German monetary union on the nature and timing of European monetary union.

Mr. Lilley

[holding answer 15 February 1990]: It is far too soon to assess the implications on European monetary union of any possible monetary union between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic.
