HC Deb 15 February 1990 vol 167 c352W
Mr. Harry Greenway

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was discussed during the Minister for Overseas Development's recent visit to southern Africa.

Mrs. Chalker

I attended the Southern Africa Development Co-ordination Conference's annual consultation meeting with donors in Lusaka on 1 and 2 February. I announced a new pledge of £10 million for regional projects and took part in discussions on the past and future work of the organisation. I also briefly visited Zimbabwe, where I had talks with Zimbabwean Ministers, and South Africa, where I visited the British Council and the health centre in the Alexandra township of Johannesburg.

Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he next intends to visit South Africa to discuss aid projects.

Mrs. Chalker

My right hon. Friend has no plans to visit South Africa for this purpose. I made a brief visit to Johannesburg on my way to Lusaka last month to discuss our aid to black South Africans with our project partners.
