HC Deb 15 February 1990 vol 167 c409W
Mr. Michael

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to end the discharge of untreated sewage into the Severn estuary; and within what timescale.

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

On 20 October 1989 my right hon. and learned Friend the Member for Folkestone and Hythe (Mr. Howard) announced details of a £1.1 billion programme (November 1987 prices) designed to bring United Kingdom bathing waters identified under the EEC bathing water directive up to the directive's standards within the next 10 years. Major schemes at Barry (£26.3 million) and Weston-Super-Mare (£13 million) will help to improve the bathing waters in the Severn estuary.
