HL Deb 14 February 1990 vol 515 c1455WA
Lord Mayhew

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What bilateral cultural contacts with Israel they support.

Lord Reay

Under the Anglo-Israeli Cultural Agreement signed in 1969, the British Council is responsible for promoting British cultural relations with Isreal. The council has an office in Tel Aviv, with a large library and a highly successful English language teaching centre, and opened an office in West Jerusalem last year. In addition to exchanges of English language teaching experts, the council arranges and funds research exchanges in the fields of science, technology and medicine and also in the arts. A major Israeli arts festival is planned for the Barbican in 1991.
