HC Deb 04 December 1990 vol 182 c99W
Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the average volume of daily traffic using the A1 between Scotch Corner and Newcastle over the past decade; and when work to convert the A1 to a three-way carriageway will commence.

Mr. Chope

The annual average daily traffic figures show:

1981 1990
Scotch Corner 16,350 28,900
Chester-le-Street 26,000 39,800
Tyne and Wear 40,800 64,400

The Tyne and Wear section of the A1(M) is currently three-lane carriageway. A study of the route from Scotch Corner to Tyneside was announced in "Roads for Prosperity". Consultants are yet to be appointed.
