§ 37. Mr. CousinsTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate for the northern region(a) the increase in mortgage interest payable between 1988 and 1989 and (b) the share of this increase accounted for by (i) rising interest rates and (ii) rising size of mortgages.
§ Mr. LilleyProjections of the information in the 1986 and 1987 family expenditure surveys indicate that between 1988 and 1989 mortage interest payable in the northern region increased by £0.4 billion. The amounts due to the rise in interest rates and to the growth in the stock of mortgages cannot be estimated reliably.
