HC Deb 18 April 1990 vol 170 c897W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether research is being undertaken to ascertain the number of people released from long-stay mental hospitals who are in prison department establishments.

Mr. Mellor

The Home Office has commissioned no research specifically on that precise issue but has granted facilities at Leeds prison to assist the Leeds Eastern health authority in one of its projects to ascertain what happens to former long-stay patients.

The extensive checklist used by the research team from the Institute of Psychiatry, university of London, commissioned to produce a psychiatric profile of the sentenced prison population includes the question of in-patient psychiatric history. The institute is scheduled to submit its report at the end of the year.
