HC Deb 18 April 1990 vol 170 cc916-7W
Mr. Tom Clarke

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what types of project are being financed by the Overseas Development Administration in the Embu, Meru and Isiolo districts of Kenya.

Mrs. Chalker

We have been assisting Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands development strategy by funding projects to stem environmental deterioration and to improve the productivity of the land in the drier areas of Embu, Meru and Isiolo districts. Under these projects £3.7 million has been committed for soil and water conservation, forestry development, livestock improvement and goat and sheep improvement.

We have also recently completed the financing of the construction and equipping of a 160-bed district hospital at Isiolo at a cost of over £3 million; we are continuing to help, for example, with the provision of technical co-operation.
