To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many cases of full-blown AIDS are presently being treated in Northern Ireland; and how many hospitals are involved in such treatment.

[holding answer 2 April 1990]: Six cases of full-blown AIDS are presently being treated in the Royal Victoria hospital in Northern Ireland.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many deaths in which AIDS was the main or a contributory cause have occurred in Northern Ireland during each year since 1984.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many HIV positive cases which have yet to develop into full-blown AIDS have been detected in Northern Ireland; and what are the trends and projections for the years up to the year 2000.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer 2 April 1990]: Forty-four HIV positive cases detected in Northern Ireland have not yet developed into full-blown AIDS.

The incidence of HIV infection and the number of AIDS cases in Northern Ireland are too small to provide a statistical basis on which to make meaningful projections of the likely rate of spread of AIDS.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if Northern Ireland is to be included in the Government's programme of anonymous HIV serosurveys which began on 15 January.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer 2 April 1990]: Depending on the results obtained from the pilot studies now taking place in Great Britain, the DHSS will consider whether to introduce such a programe in Northern Ireland.
