HC Deb 04 April 1990 vol 170 cc680-1W
Mr. O'Neill

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the current assessment of Soviet levels of production of military equipment for the Soviet army.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

We believe that in 1989 Soviet production of tanks fell markedly from the levels of recent years to around half the previous total. Production of light armoured fighting vehicles and artillery also declined but far less dramatically. However, such cuts were from high historic levels and current production volumes remain high, with the Soviet Union out-producing the whole of NATO in all categories of land arms equipment.
