HC Deb 04 April 1990 vol 170 c630W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what arrangements are made for providing a Malaysian diet to remand prisoners who may request such a diet; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

Remand prisoners receive the same meals as convicted inmates. Although a Malaysian diet is not provided, dietary variations are supplied on grounds of religion, and any inmate may request a vegetarian or vegan diet. Rice is issued in lieu of potatoes if it is a basic part of the diet in the inmate's country, and establishments use a wide variety of spices in preparing meals.
