HC Deb 04 April 1990 vol 170 c630W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what educational facilities and opportunities for association there are for unconvicted prisoners in Pentonville prison; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

There are education classes for two hours each morning and afternoon from Monday to Friday for those who wish to attend. In addition to recreational association for two hours once a week, each prisoner may associate with others in the course of routine activities, which include one hour's exercise in the open air each day (weather permitting), social visits for at least 15 minutes each weekday, physical education sessions lasting one and a half hours twice a week, visits to the prison canteen twice a week and attendance at religious services on Sundays. The regime will be considerably improved when these prisoners move to a completely refurbished wing in about six weeks' time.
