§ Mr. CryerTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the position of refugees in Hong Kong and the compulsory repatriation of people to Vietnam.
§ Mr. MaudeThere are about 13,000 Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong whom resettlement countries have pledged to resettle within three years. Those who have been determined not to be refugees have no prospect of resettlement and, as agreed by the Geneva conference in June, should return to their country of origin. Repatriation is an internationally accepted method for dealing with illegal immigrants. There is no reason why it should not apply to Vietnamese.
