HL Deb 18 October 1989 vol 511 cc1016-8WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether there is any organisation campaigning against deliberate noise pollution, for example by recorded music, in shops and other public places.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of the Environment (Lord Hesketh)

Several organisations, including the National Society for Clean Air, the Noise Council and the Noise Abatement Society are active in campaigning against noise nuisance. The Government provide financial support to the National Society for Clean Air and the Noise Council and sponsor research by the Building Research Establishment into noise, including the effects of amplified music. Local authorities have powers to combat noise disturbance under the provisions of the Control of Pollution Act 1974 and from time to time carry out local anti-noise campaigns.
