HC Deb 17 October 1989 vol 158 cc19-20W
Mr. Pike

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what additional resources were made available for policing and security at the 1989 Conservative conference at Blackpool.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

The additional costs of policing the Conservative party conference at Blackpool will be met by the Lancashire police authority. Under the normal police funding arrangements, the Government contribute both directly through police grant—which is at 51 per cent.—and indirectly through block grant.

I understand from the chief constable of Lancashire that the additional costs including related security measures, are estimated to be £1.08 million.

The Conservative party, like other political parties, also incurs costs on specific security measures at its conference.
