To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many civil servants there are at present; and what was the equivalent figure 10 years ago.

At 1 July 1989, there were 567,073 staff in post in central Government Departments. This informa-tion was published by Her Majesty's Treasury in a press release on 18 September 1989 (No. 72/89). The comparable figure for 1 July 1979 is 723,747.
