§ 48. Mr. Malcolm BruceTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the number of first-year undergraduates entering institutions of higher education(a) this and (b) last autumn; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. JacksonProvisional figures indicate that there were 176,000 United Kingdom-domiciled initial entrants to full-time and sandwich first degree and sub-degree higher education courses in Great Britain in autumn 1988. Preliminary indications are that this autumn's figures will be up to 10,000 higher. This is part of a wider and continuing trend which shows the success of the Government's education policies.
