To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what action he proposes to take on the issue of the level of fines for health and safety at work offences; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nicholls

Following representations from the chairman of the Health and Safety Commission and the director general of the Health and Safety Executive about the low level of fines for health and safety offences, my right hon. Friend is considering them in conjunction with my right hon. and learned Friend the Home Secretary.
