§ Mr. Nicholas BakerTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make an assessment of the Rosehaugh self-build housing initiative and issue recommendations to district councils on the applicability of this initiative to those who are unemployed or on low incomes in their areas and could be thus assisted to build their own homes.
§ Mr. ChopeThe first scheme under this initiative is still under way; so it is too early to make an assessment. I understand a number of similar schemes are in prospect, which give people the opportunity to harness their energy and commitment to provide a home for themselves. I very much hope that they will be successful, and I would encourage local authorities to consider whether this initiative would be of help in their own areas.
