§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonFour police forces have forensic science laboratories in which the following numbers of scientifically qualified staff are employed:
Number Grampian 7 Lothian and Borders 8 Strathclyde 25 Tayside 3 The remaining four forces use these laboratories for forensic science services.
§ Mr. DalyellTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will increase the funding of the independent forensic unit of the department of forensic science at Strathclyde university in the light of the requirement on police forces to pay for forensic services.
§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonFunding for the Strathclyde university department of forensic science as for universities generally is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science.
