HL Deb 24 May 1989 vol 508 c495WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they and the other signatories of the European Convention on Human Rights are taking to draw the attention of the Turkish Government to the following matters: (a) the conditions of detained persons; (b) freedom for the legitimate operations of trades unions, voluntary and religious bodies; (c) the right of peaceful assembly, e.g. on 1st May; (d) Articles 37 and 39 of the Treaty of Lausanne.

Baroness Hooper

As my noble friend the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Lord Glenarthur, said in answer to the noble Lord, Lord Kilbracken, on 8th May, we have urged the Turkish Government to respect and abide by the terms and conditions of the international treaties and conventions to which they are a party, including the European Convention on Human Rights. I cannot speak for the other signatories of the European convention.
