Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many complaints are pending before the European Commission on Human Rights in respect of Turkey, and under what broad headings they fall.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Energy (Baroness Hooper)

According to the latest figures from the commission, 20 applications are pending in respect of Turkey. One application, declared admissible on 11th May 1989, concerns detentions and raises issues under Articles 5 and 3 of the convention. Proceedings before the commission are confidential until declared admissible or inadmissible. Information is not available therefore concerning the subject matter of the other applications, on which the commission has not yet reached a decision.
